DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce our Canadian Indigenous Mapping Workshop in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, from May 26-28\, 2020.  The IMW in Regina will host up to 150 participants. The workshop will explore Google\, Esri Canada\, QGIS\, mapbox\, and other geospatial tools. Participants will learn how to use these tools to collect\, host\, visualize\, share\, and publish community generated data and better understand how to apply these skills to issues impacting Saskatchewan’s Indigenous communities. The technical training will be co-led by The Firelight Group\, Google Earth Outreach\, Google’s Trainer Network\, Esri Canada\, Mapbox\, and a global network of Indigenous mapping experts. DESCRIPTION:The Gathering will offer an opportunity to explore First Nations solutions in the face of rapid change. The climate crisis is inseparable from the daily experience of First Nations. This National Climate Gathering will focus on First Nations perspectives on climate change. This will allow attendees a better understanding of how the climate crisis is accelerating and exacerbating existing challenges (e.g.\, biodiversity loss)\, so they can then discuss solutions in a multi-dimensional\, interconnected\, and interrelated way.

With the federal government’s commitment to protect 17% of Canada’s land area by 2020\, and increasing that target to 30% by 2030\, with the provincial government’s intention to double its protected and conserved land and freshwater from 4.6% to 10%\, with Indigenous groups looking at Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs)\, and conservation groups working to protect spaces and species locally and regionally\, there is a lot going on! What are the big projects going on in my area? What are the opportunities for my organization to get involved? How does all this conservation work fit into provincial and federal strategies and priorities? SUMMARY:Energy Democracy and Energy Justice in Canada\, New Zealand\, and Global Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Julie MacArthur examines the promise of energy democracy in Aotearoa New Zealand\, a country that already has a significant share of energy from renewable sources at 83%\, but faces significant challenges in addressing issues of energy poverty and energy system transformation in distribution\, storage and energy efficiency. New Zealand also provides a useful case for understanding the unique role that local energy democracy may play in contexts which lack or lose policy support\, and those where postcolonial struggles for indigenous sovereignty feature prominently\, like Canada.
